Pourquoi opter pour des vêtements avec protection solaire?

As you know, the sun and its ultraviolet (UV) rays can be harmful to the skin. Hats, shirts, pants and other clothing with sun protection will help prevent these rays from reaching you.

Designed for travel and outdoor activities, this type of clothing also features other strengths making it a precious ally.

Look for the Ultraviolet Protection Factor

A “regular” fabric, like the one found on your favourite cotton t-shirt, provides minimal protection. Clothing designed with sun protection (sometimes called UV filter or UV protection) is specifically intended to protect you from the sun’s UV rays.

They come with a number, the UV Protection Factor (UVPF). The higher the number, the more the clothing protects you. Thus, it lets fewer UV rays pass through.

The protection factor is based on several elements such as the type of fabric, its density, and even its colours. Furthermore, some fabrics are treated with compounds designed to reflect UV rays.

Here is a table showing the different levels of protection offered based on the protection factor. In addition to UVPF, you will sometimes also see SPF, UPF or IPU.

UVPF Level of protection % of UV rays blocked
15 Good 93.3 %
20 Good 95.0 %
25 Good 96.0 %
30 Very Good 96.7 %
30 Very Good 96.7 %
35 Very Good 97.1 %
40 Excellent 97.5 %
45 Excellent 97.8 %
50 Excellent 98.0 %
50+ Excellent 98.0 %

Of course, clothing with sun protection will protect you, but not at 100%. Applying sunscreen is still highly recommended.
